Side Trip to View the Grand Canyon
(From the just-because-I-can department...)
Here is a real-time blog entry posted from the airplane flying from Cincinnati to Los Angeles (second leg of the flight to New Zealand). We just passed over the Grand Canyon and got a really good view out our window -- all the kids got to see. I took a picture with the digital camera, scaled it down for the web page, composed this entry offline, and then used the modem in the seat-back phone to post it while still in the air. Jason has already taken some pictures as well that we'll put up later... we're on our way!

7:15am Wheels up...
We got up at 5am (after staying up late to pack!) and are now waiting for the car to take us to the airport. Everyone is very excited. We're hoping to keep you posted along the way. In the meantime Happy Valentine's Day to all and enjoy your school vacation.

Open Thread
This is what "real" blogs do when they want to give the visitors a chance to speak. Marj just sent out a widespread notice to friends, family and classmates, so if you want to say something back to us (or wish us "bon voyage") click on the "Comments" link at the end of this entry.

Rachel's Thought
I'm a bit scared, but yet excited! Because I've never been out of North America. Australia is so cool and we have been waiting for so long.
New Zealand Ho! To Australia we go!
countdown 3..2..1.. until liftoff (boy, I wish the days went that fast). All the Andresens are excited, in fact most of us really, really wish that the days could go faster. I'm really excited but I'm actually sort of freaked out now! I mean before it was hoping, then planning, and now it's finally time for us to leave for the trip. Since we're really going to go, it's fair to say, that I will be sending things back to my classmates and if I can my friends. So be on the lookout for e-mails from me, or you should keep on checking the blog!
World Clock
Here is a cool Java applet Web page that shows you what time it is where we are at each destination. Check it out! [Kevin thinks the Java applet took too long to load.]

Imagine
The last time the Andresens and Haynors got together, this was the result.
I cannot imagine what will happen when the coriolis affect is reversed. Toilets will flush backwards, the ozone will thin out, and who knows what will happen with these kids. Help us all!
Alright kids. Here is the experiment of the week. If you let water go down the drain in your bathtub in the Northern hemispere the rotation of the earth causes it to spin a certain direction. Which direction does it spin? The Andresens and Haynors will check this out in the southern hemisphere and let you know if the result is different.

Meet the Andresens
It occurred to me that not everyone looking at this travel journal knows all of us. We're the Andresens from Andover, Massachusetts (by way of California, Rochester NY, Michigan and New Jersey): Jason (10 - 5th grade), Marj, Kevin, Ben (5 - preschool), and Rachel (8 - 3rd grade). This trip is to celebrate Marj's 40th birthday, and an early down payment on Kevin's 40th in May, Marj's adult bat mitzvah in June and our 15th wedding anniversary in August. (This is also a test of image uploading, which we hope to use on the trip!)
